I had expected some argument now. Just compare a penumbral 50% eclipse to uneclipsed Moon. There is a difference, even if 50% is not enough for detection with unaided eye in nature. We have discussed earlier that the umbral edge may be too sharp, however this is also one of the worst things to photograph. Either you burn out the penumbra part to see the shadow edge, or the umbra is black and penumbra has a longer gradient. It is just not a linear falloff. Probably we can play more with shadow texture and overall brightness of the Moon during the whole eclipse.

This issue already exists.
Just noticed, that the penumbral lunar eclipse isn't visible at all.
