no notifications while messaging app is open

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.open messaging app
2.lock screen
3.receive message

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
expected:
hear sound, feel vibration
instead:
nothing happens

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
prog: 1.1.0 (although i believe the issue has existed since 0.9.94 due to this

Please provide any additional information below.
i would imagine the fix put in place kills the popups and notifications while 
the messaging app is open - may i recommend that only the popups be killed 
while the notifications still be shown and immediately marked as read since the 
messaging app is open?
