I understand that it is hard to design rulesets that create a realistic road body. I think Streets-gl looks already nice with lane support. But yes OSM also features curbs and crossings, maybe there is the chance to 3D bevel the road towards the footway and add areas to seamlesly cross between street and surrounding ways.
