using an expired proxy certificate returns unhelpful error message #48

The error message when using an expired proxy certificate returns an SSL related message from the server that gives no indication that the problem is with the client credentials. The client should check the proxy/certificate before use and provide a more reasonable message.

This is the error that is returned:

$ stratus-describe-instance 
Network error: [Errno 8] _ssl.c:503: EOF occurred in violation of protocol
