Instead of only having the option to open a video in a new window, add the option to automatically cast to VLC when you click on a video. Or better yet, if you have it installed on a tablet, or phone, and you use it as a remote... have the option to automatically cast as an option, which unlocks another option of where to cast it.
Another option when you click on a movie is instead of just a play button, have a cast to button on the side which opens another list of detected castable devices.
