When a continuous attribute contains negative values, use the value furthest from zero to determine the slider endpoints so that zero is always the midpoint.
In addition to the two endpoint colors, default or custom, use a third calculated color in the middle to represent zero so the color gradients go from the negative endpoint to zero to positive endpoint. This middle color could be the default binary zero color: very dark grey for a black background and very light grey for a white background.
