Repeat your test in our demo. If error will happen - this is elfinder bug, if not - drupal bug. Use firebug to look at server response
Thanks for the fast reply. The error doesn't seem to happen in the demo, so I think you're right it's a drupal bug. I'll post my issue on their fora. Thanks!
I know this is long closed but I've just found this error on an older site I have to do some maintenance on built on Kohana using elFinder 2.0

I've got a strange issue over here. Whenever I upload a .pdf file to the directory, I get the error message "Unable to parse server response". The file isn't uploaded, however if I refresh, the filename appears in the list. But I'm using Drupal and the file on which I got the error doesn't appear in the content-list.
It's a bit confusing, but files with the error do appear in the elFinder, but don't in my content overview. Files without an error are just fine. It doesn't happen with all files, only some. I've tested with Chrome and IE. However, in Firefox the error doesn't seem to happen.
Does elFinder support cross-browser support?
