It works just fine here:
Could you share the subtitle file?
I also have a DeepL API key and can't get it to translate anything at all. When I click "Translate", I get this error message: Any thoughts?
[EDIT] After I hit Cancel, it then pops up the same message and all I can do is hit "Abandon" and it shuts down the whole Subtitle Edit program.

Thx, the crash should now be fixed in latest beta: https://github.com/SubtitleEdit/subtitleedit/releases/download/4.0.8/SubtitleEditBeta.zip
@niksedk Thank you very much for the quick reaction. Just FYI, I didn't mention I was using a Windows 8.1 computer. I think the problem is specific to 8.1 because I tried is on Win 10 and Win 11, and it works fine.
I can't use the automatic translator with the Deepl API. It doesn't translate any of the text, it only leaves the formatting codes.
I really need help with this, please!
Thanks!
