How to use the DeepL Pro Plugin? #8985

I signed up for DeepL Pro for $344.88 annually but I'm unable to use it with Subtitle Edit.

I've been frustrated for over the past hour on trying to figure out how to create an API key. None of the instructions in the documentation or anything I've read anywhere match anything I'm seeing on their web site. VERY frustrating.

The only thing I can find is what they're calling "Authentication Key for CAT tool plugins". It's under "Account" under the "Account" subheading:

This key does not work with I use the "Translate with DeepL.com Pro" plugin:

Any idea what could be wrong? How do I create an API key with DeepL Pro?

Their help documentation for DeepL API says, "You need an authentication key to access the API. You can find your key in the "API Keys" tab in your account. I don't have an "API Keys" tab. The linked URL just redirects to https://www.deepl.com/en/your-account/subscription.

For the above screenshot of the DeepL Pro Plugin in Subtitle Edit, I did try adding :fx to the end of the API key. I get the same error. I also tried using the https://api-free.deepl.com URL instead, with and without :fx appended to the end of the key. Same Forbidden error.

This is the first time I've ever signed up for a service advertising API usage and was both surprised and frustrated to find seemingly no API functionality whatsoever. What the hell? 💢

After TWO HOURS, I figured out that you can purchase "DeepL Translate", or "DeepL API", but not BOTH. If you sign up for one, then your account is unable to sign up for the other. If you want both, then you will need TWO DeepL accounts, EACH with a different e-mail address. I cancelled DeepL Pro and instead signed up for DeepL API.

Thanks very much DeepL for wasting me two hours of my free time and costing me some of my own sanity.

Just leaving this here for anyone searching in the future...

I discovered Immersive Translate. It's the best thing ever hands down; beats everything else for my purposes. Hopefully it stays around! :sweat_smile:
