When dealing with curves sometimes the normals of the mesh twist unexpectedly.
In the curve object settings, it would be good to be able to set a default twist angle so the curves are always facing the correct angle. This is a bug in Blender that may be fixed later once more users start to notice what's going on with the curves.
This will also act as a temporary fix to improve rigging with curves for cutout animation in Blender. It also generates more consistency among the curve objects. Currently, the default extruded behavior of an open curve doesn't match other curve objects faces, which is the default axis of X & Y.
