A Question #117

Hey,

With the recent success of my ATA and the phone working now (save for SIPBroker
code dialing), the law office that I'm assoicated with (I don't work for them,
but I am family members with the owner) is interested in setting up their
computers to allow 'free' phone dialing (maybe outbound only) using SIPSorcery
and Google Voice.

The question I've got is: Is it possible to dial out (to either the same number
or completely different numbers) using more than one softphone at the same time?

Say, computer 1 dials a number using the softphone and is connected (they would
all be through the same Google Voice account, at least that's the way I would
set it up unless the dial plan has changed and now alllows mulitple accounts).

Then, computer 2 (signed in using the same SIPSorcery account) uses their
softphone to dial a completely different number and possibly be connected (the
question is whether or not, this is possible?).

I mean, I've never tried it that way since I never have more than 1 computer
(and when I'm with my cellphone, I'm never at the computer and keep it off). I
mean, I never have more than 1 device connected at a time.

Thanks for your help,
X.A.N.A. V. (my 'fake name')

Thanks for your question.

First things first. As a general rule, no one should ever recommend running
their business phones off of Google Voice. You'll see that all over the forums.
Never. Second, there are far better ways to run IP telephony than what we are
doing here. I urge you to check out "Incredible PBX". Not just Asterisk, not
just Asterisk-in-a-Box, but Incredible PBX. It is an amazing (and free!) PBX
that installs from CD and includes free Google Voice calling as one of its many
features.

I believe you will have a tough time configuring more than one free outbound
phone line using Google Voice, but Incredible PBX -- or other systems like it
-- is really meant to run at the very heart of a business phone system. If
you're looking to do a good job for free (or just for the cost of your own
labor), definitely look into Incredible PBX and forget about SIP Sorcery.
