Comparing SIP services #85

Is there any advantage to using IPKall, Sipgate, iptel or any of the other
various free services? Whether in speed, sound quality, stability or
possibility of the company collapsing. I have a lot of friends who would be
interested in getting numbers, but I want to make sure this thing is stable.

And also, why the extra step of needing a registration for the Sipgate account,
whereas with IPKall you do NOT need the extra step? Is there an advantage?
(BTW, this should be added into the file - I spent a number of hours figuring
out why I could not get the IPKall number registered, and afterwards I found
out that it was unnecessary.)

I only have IPKall, IPCOMMS and Gizmo5 DIDs, so I'll try to cover them.

1. Gizmo: very good, naturally integrates with Google Voice but new accounts
are not available (Gizmo5 has been acquired by Google and new sign-ups
suspended until re-launch).

2. IPKall pros: easy to get, easy to configure, fast connects, good voice
quality. Cons: account expires after 30 days of inactivity; may report local
termination's number instead of real CID. If you care about CID of your
callers, you'd better consider some other DID for forwarding of incoming calls.

3. IPCOMMS pros: fast connects, good voice quality, no problems with CID. Cons:
hard to get nowadays (need to call them and voice your request), not so easy to
configure, problems with rejecting of incoming calls (there is a workaround in
my Complex dialplan).

I have updated section 9 of both the wiki on this site and the Free Calling
HOWTO to clarify the fact that registering for IPKall using your SIP Sorcery
SIP number is enough. Thanks for the feedback.

I will also work on expanding this as a new section in the document.

It appears Sipgate has some new numbers. I just signed up successfully. What
is the advantage to using it versus IPKall?

As Mike described, IPKall has a habit of messing up the incoming caller id, so
incoming calls (not initiated by you as a return call from Google Voice) may
show up with bad caller IDs. Sipgate doesn't appear to have such issues, or
none have been reported.
