Bug description Taunt abilites not forcing pets to attack the caster.

Also, be aware the warriors can taunt your pet, so make sure you’re watching for that. src

When killing pets, taunt/challenging shout/mocking blow works very well src

Thanks! There used to be a rumor circulating around that your pet has to be on aggressive for that to work, could we try to find any information regarding that?

By Malekith on 2008/09/07 at 5:46 PM (Patch 3.0.1) This is where taunt comes in handy. If you feel a trap or wyvern sting coming, try using either taunt or challenging shout on the hunter's pet. The pet will be forced to attack you for minimum 3 seconds, which should be enough time for it to break the trap/sleep. Note that this can also be done with any freezing trap, not just a survival hunter's trap. [src]

Okay, great, so direct taunts (Taunt, Mocking Blow, Growl(?)) should still work on the pet regardless of its selected state (passive/aggressive/defensive) while AoE taunts (such as Challenging Roar or Challenging Shout) should not. Thanks for the research!

Worth adding is the fact that pets with Passive selected are not going to be affected (by AoE taunts) which appears to be almost every single pet in PvP scenarios.

Not affected by taunts in general or just the AoE?

Jerrythemagicdog commented 4 years ago

My mistake, only AoE taunts. Will correct it there.

I don't agree with the conclusion made by reading the patchnote here.

To clarify I see two scenarios:

Both are coherent with the patchnote, so we are still missing data/proof. This is only for the passive mode part as the defensive/aggressive cases seem clear.

Taunting the enemy pet to make it break the CC is really useful. AOE taunt the pet so it’ll break the sheep, works for both paladin and warrior. April 2010

Taunts work on pets, and damn, I'm using it often when I need a pet kill or help my healer. August 2009

love this thread. doesn't taunt not work though if they keep their pet on passive? That's correct. Your taunt has no effect on a pet on passive. July 2010

By Kramp on 2009/08/12 at 6:05 AM (Patch 3.1.3) Taunt IS usable in pvp, I love when hunter's pets are breaking traps for me. [src]

wowwiki - 25 Sep 2008 - most likely not updated for 2.4.3

Unless the pet is on passive (like it should be), your totem will make it attack you. Not completely sure though, but most Hunters are dumb enough to not notice. 4/12/2008

By 236yfpjkjhd on 2007/11/05 at 4:35 PM (Patch 2.2.3) ... the hunter's pet came running for me. When my voidwalker taunted the pet it turned to the voidy instead of me. [pet taunting pet]

By Barrow on 2009/01/05 at 9:26 PM (Patch 3.0.3) Here's a little tip, since "taunt in PvP" has come up multiple times in this thread: Taunt works perfectly on non-passive pets in PvP. This means, for example, a tank can taunt a pet immediately before intentionally stepping on a freezing trap to cause the pet to break it (the taunt overrides the pet's AI). [src]

Fighting large groups of enemy players or mobs. An aggressive pet uses a threat list just like any other monster and will focus on whoever is creating the most aggro (usually due to damage dealt to you or your party, but possibly from threat abilities), using your pet as a main assist is an easy way to prioritize targets. Be careful in battle grounds though, as this makes your pet susceptible to Stoneclaw Totem and other taunt abilities like the growls of other hunters' pets! An aggressive pet may not do what you tell it to if something else catches its attention. August 27 2008
