duration thoughts: A non-dotted note may be offset by half its length but not by any smaller amount. 4 2 4 okay, 4. _2 8 bad a non-dotted note may cross of the same value, but not a larger break 4 2 4 okay, 4 8 *4 8 4 bad Except for fixed set of patterns like 8 4 4 4 8 dotted notes: may be at the beginning or end of a division of size 2_base perhaps may be at beginning or end of division of size base, to allow "4. 8 4" in 3/4 meter. Or: cannot cross division larger than base may be offset by 1/2 base...or by (multiples of) smallest dot. I want to allow things like 11/16 meter "4 4.."
