Any way to increase the 20,000 song limit? #1

TokyoScarab commented 2 years ago

I've heard a couple people talk about modding older firmware in the R3 to increase the song limit from 20k to around 40 -60k songs. I wasn't able to get either of the older modded firmware I found online to do this. Do you know if it's possible to do on 1.7? I'd love to take a crack at it myself but I'm on Windows instead of Linus like some of the tools you mention are for. Do you have any suggestions on where I could start out in trying to modify the firmware? I would really appreciate any advice you could give me, thanks! :D

SuperTaiyaki commented 2 years ago

@TokyoScarab It looks like the tools Hiby use are Windows-based - look for the theme editors for Hiby-based players (Shanling, I think the R2 or original R3 also had one). Before the SD card based themes the editors worked by replacing the theme files and rebuilding the entire firmware image.

I've got a copy of the modified non-pro R3 firmware with the increased song limit, will see if I can figure out how it was done.

@TokyoScarab https://mega.nz/file/Cl5zwKoK#QKxqtlV95-LtwUoNNGvjoTIj-ss_Hi7IUUEH_Hhcsk4 I think I got it, want to try? (Fix is on the file_limit branch, I haven't tested anything)

TokyoScarab commented 2 years ago

I just tried this and it was able to update the library past 20,000. I also tried the shuffle mode and it was able to pull up songs past the 20k mark and play them without any issue. Thank you so much, I really appreciate that you did this! I would love to be able to poke around in here a little bit for fun. The part I was getting caught up on in the unpacking was the "Set up a fake NAND flash device to flash the UBIFS file" I tried some googling but only ended up finding some Linux based tools initially. Do you have any suggestions on software/tools I should look at for doing this? Thanks again! :D

Hi, could you also patch the new 2.0 firmware for Hiby R3 pro saber Edition? https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hgQnUZ2yq5pz9dRihUZYFubMuKwmJNcz/view?usp=share_link (Link from https://hiby.com/apps/help-center#hc-r3-pro-r3-pro-saber-firmware-v20-update)

If this firmware exploit could be applied to the 2.2 firmware it would be greatly appreciated since 1.7 firmware does not work for the R3 2022.

Link to download 2.2 firmware can be found here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Hiby/comments/11fu3z7/comment/jdmo0gz/?context=3

After much slacking, here's an attempt at the 2.2 update (sort fix, file count fix, no album shuffle):

https://mega.nz/file/XookyIxD#LNf_BivCGnFq8OUAtNmGbm1yrDBsu-gU3AZBfMArnEE

I flashed it to my R3 Pro but haven't done any real testing. Somebody please let me know how it goes. All I can say so far is that the LED is annoying.

ghost commented 1 year ago

Installed on my R3 2022 device and I haven't notice any issues thus far but I have installed it for a couple of minutes. I will update my comment in the coming days if I notice any major issues. Thank you again for updating this custom firmware!!!

Hi, can you patch or mod the R3 (first gen) last 3.7 firmware? I tried copying system folder of R3 pro 2.2 custom fw and repack. it's fixed a sort and song limit, but audio and volume was not working.

SuperTaiyaki commented 1 year ago

@Kayymiem0r I don't have an original R3, you're probably better off using Snoopy112's firmware. Not sure what the latest version is.

Thank you, but Snoopy's FW only fixed the song limit and optimized png file of UI; name sort was not fixed. Latest version Snoopy's FW is 3.4 and Hiby's official FW is 3.7. I've Japanese Thai and English song for around 6000+ songs, its song name is weirdly sorting.

I suppose I can try. The Hiby site only lists up to 3.6, where's the 3.7 update? And which version did you need? (The R3 had the bar and slash versions, right....?)

It's here https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1og_LFbAfs0Xk2latWTlWytrUib3XKZ1L (bar version) Hiby not update their website.

Ok, the patches applied without any issues (I think). Let me know how it goes. https://mega.nz/file/7hIgyAYb#flDiaJQ7ge4VKwVuUnCnIIlLtCxWCBKB9kSKXlxOaOo

I tested. there are no any issues but it's no different from 3.7 original, maybe patch is not working. I compare these FW's.

sort name top

R3 pro 2.2 custom FW are perfectly sorting name.

SuperTaiyaki commented 1 year ago

Sorry, I think I built it with the wrong binary (really need to automate that part, it's not the first time). I think this version got it right! https://mega.nz/file/64oFxIQD#8sr6Y7jzjXD6xEGhJ-0Hobi89uBS2mdYTeN5dEF1ktY

(I love that you've got different themes for each version, I should add some sort of marker to make it obvious which version of the firmware is running....)

Hi SuperTaiyaki I’m new to this forum. Trying to update my hiby r3 (not a pro model, the original R3) (current firmware 3.6) to be able to handle more than 20,000 tracks. Can you confirm is this link above for vers 3.7 the right one to try out? Many thanks O

SuperTaiyaki commented 2 weeks ago

Hi @Opotis , The one from 2023-08-10 should be the latest one, but the previous commenter never told me if it works or not (and I don't have an R3 to test). If you're only trying to change the song limit you could also use the firmware from head-fi, which seems to have actually been tested.

Opotis commented 2 weeks ago

Thanks very much! I did end up getting it to work, however although it allowed me to pay all the approx 50,000 songs on random, it did not allow me to click in to the SD card and search songs by folder. So I’ve reverted back back to normal firmware for now

Thanks for the feedback. If you don't mind version 3.4 I suspect Snoopy112's version will work better.

Opotis commented 2 weeks ago

I’ve just realised it’s the Snoopy 3.4 one I used! Which one is your version? I wonder if that will work

I also tried the snoopy 2.1 custom firmware bar version, also no luck in accessing tracks via sd card

https://mega.nz/file/64oFxIQD#8sr6Y7jzjXD6xEGhJ-0Hobi89uBS2mdYTeN5dEF1ktY This is 3.7 bar version, with my fixes applied (hopefully).

I've got no idea what's going on with the SD card browser but if you can point me to a firmware that works, I might be able to just apply the maximum track number fix.

Opotis commented 2 weeks ago

Hi Jeremy, Thank you so much for trying this. It is the original 3.7 bar version I use (the one from Hiby) so I hoped that your new version of it would work. I’m afraid to say the same issue happens. Once I have updated the firmware, and then scanned my music library it comes up with an error when I try to view the Music files by folder through the SD card.

On the original 3.7 version this does not happen. Really weird!

Thank you for trying! Brian

Ok, let's see if this works: https://mega.nz/file/D0gTFJwZ#QvBp3HrW-_kIL4hJhIyvaxbKu7hpnUIhpmcKjIQ-Hoo

This is the 3.7 bar version from the google drive link above (Hiby's website stops at 3.6), with only the song limit patch applied - the other versions had my sort order fixes applied too.

Opotis commented 1 week ago

Thank you so much, Jeremy! I’ve just left for a trip to Asia to China and Vietnam so will not be back for seven days but I will try this out as soon as I get back. I ended up bringing my R4 for this trip. I really appreciate your help with all this. It’s absolutely fantastic. Where are you based? Are you in Asia?

Have a lovely weekend, Brian
