I always liked the XMGR manager. At some point it was actually the default XMS driver used by SvarDOS. Sadly, it became closed source past 2012 so not really an option. I have updated XMGR to the latest (2022, freeware) version in the SvarDOS repo.
At least a 2020 version seems to be available in source: https://gitlab.com/FreeDOS/drivers/xmgr/-/blob/master/SOURCE/XMGR/XMGR.ASM?ref_type=heads
Is this newer than the 2012 OSS edition you mentioned?
Yes, it is newer, and it is also available here: http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/freedos/files/dos/ellis/xmgr/2020-04-15c/
And it was already "freeware" by then (albeit still with source available, apparently).
It is older than the 2022 version, though. I have added the latest (2022) version to the SvarDOS repo. Downloaded from the original site at http://optimizr.dyndns.org/dos/drivers.html
the "open-source" (presumably outdated and with less features) versions are here: http://mercurycoding.com/downloads.html#DOS
The link above lists also some HimemX updates by Japheth
Windows 3.11 then outputs the message
This does not occur with the XMGR package provided by SvarDOS and also not with the HIMEM provided by Windows 3.11.
Surprisingly no problems with enhanced mode...
