BLE Transfer returning default data #65

From @Dylan-Wells via Slack "When testing the Bluetooth transfer everything works again until when I go to look at the data and that’s when I just see the initial data on the iPad."

This bug needs to be tracked down and fixed.

@Dylan-Wells could you add steps to reproduce the bug here? We'll start moving this conversation from Slack DMs to here.

A couple of clarifying questions:

  1. What do you mean by default items?
  2. How are you viewing the default data? Is this through the results screen, when exporting, or both?
  3. Presumably some data is getting transferred between the devices. How does the data compare when you send the same matches you received back to the original device. Is the original match data identical to the match data that was sent, then received? Or is the sent one missing the data compared to the original one?

After some more testing, I'm able to get this to reproduce intermittently, but this is through the normal course of transfers and there doesn't seem to be any tells as to what triggers it. A couple of side effects that could point to the cause:

  1. The transfer lasts a very long time
  2. The "Receiving Data" HUD on the Browser pops up, but the "Sending Data" HUD does not pop up on the Advertiser
  3. The state machine appears to be stuck in "Advertising" for the Advertiser, but the Browser moves to "Receiving Data (Linked very closely to 2.)

I am able to fix this by pressing the "Reset State" button before the transfer completes or errors out. The tell I've used to do this is based on 2. and 3. I have not gotten the transfer to act weird twice in a row, so resetting the state and trying again fixes the weird state we get into.

I would say this is a good workaround while we investigate this further. For now, I would say any transfers that take longer than 7 seconds are probably going to error out or not work. If this is the case, hit the reset state button on both and restart the transfer.

Matthew and I tried to test the Bluetooth transfer on the 2 iPads that 525 owns. We found that Advertising and Browsing portions appeared to work. We were able to see that the iPads connected. It even showed "completed". However, when we went to look at the Match list, it did not show the transferred files, only the original files.

What version of the App are you running? It should be 1.0 build 2 (this is shown in the project settings). What type of iPads did you use?

If you run both devices through Xcode what are the console outputs for both the browser and advertiser?

@McIntyre227 another quick follow up: The new matches don't show up on the match list, but if you try to export all matches, do the new matches show up in the CSV file?

As far as I know we were using the latest version. I'm pretty sure that Matthew loaded it on the iPads Friday night. I don't know the type of iPad we are using They are the ones that the Swartdogs team has, the same ones they've had for a long, long time. I don't know about running the devices through Xcode. I'll have to get back to you on that. As for the CSV file, we made up 5 matches of data on each iPad. After the attempted Bluetooth transfer, each iPad only showed their original 5 matches in the match list. The CSV file also only showed the 5 matches.
