another possible enhancement: dropdown list of observers, needs to be entered by an admin (JLM)?

jQuery UI has a very nice multi-valued autocomplete widget which would be a good fit for the observer's field. Example found here: http://jqueryui.com/autocomplete/#multiple

from the database, it looks like it is possible for subtrees to have slightly different angles and distances... perhaps there could be some feedback if a user edits a subtree to have a vastly different angle, for instance? As well, there could be some way to validate that all subtrees have the same species.
