After showing my son this program, he very much wanted to try using it on his laptop (a hand-me-down from dad.) It is running on old laptop with an AMD Turion 64 processor running Linux Mint Debian with Xfce. For me, the edges of the screen were present, when enabled, but nothing in the console is drawing and the terminal that I called the program from exhibits messages similar to those by 2erowf. I have included the displayed messages below:

It seems that there may be a problem with the driver for my video card, which is apparently a Radeon RS480M [Mobility Radeon Xpress 200].
I decided to post this information to see if it is informative to solving your problem and my own.
