Before sharing some data on GBIF, it would be great if the Symbiota portals could check if a given collection is associated with one of the GBIF-supported licenses.
Ideally, it would return a warning or error message if this isn't the case.
Ideally there would be a short checklist in the registration process and it would be great if there were flags on the dataset page that included things like "license not supported" We can make sure all the licenses on SCAN are updated by the end of April. Why are these the only licenses supported and what are the implications of using a license that is not supported? thanks!
If a license is unsupported, in theory the data shouldn't be indexed and made available on GBIF.
However, sometime the licenses aren't parsed properly and the data is shared anyway under a different license.
More information on licenses on GBIF here.
Marie,
All of the SCAN collections should now be using a supported CC license.
Cheers, Neil
Marie,
Now I am confused, the page you reference indicates CC-BY-NC is fine, it says nothing about using 4.0 vs 3.0. and once again if this information is conveniently put on the registration page it would help data providers.
Neil
Thanks Neil! And yes indeed the page doesn't show 3.0 vs 4.0 (only if you click on the link, you can see that we support 4.0: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/).
I logged an issue to ask if we could clarify the text: https://github.com/gbif/portal-feedback/issues/2716
thanks and we will remove all options except ones supported by GBIF from the drop-down menu when a collection is set up
Text still has not changed to be more specific and it should be in the registration document

Some datasets published through GBIF don't have the Creative Commons licenses that GBIF support currently:
