"Catalog Number" label on skeletal data entry screen may need more help text. #74

Raised by Anne Barber in Symbiota Webinar 2. Skeletal data entry form has a control for dwc:catalogNumber. Different collections within a TCN may use a mapping of barcode number, catalog number, accession number, onto catalog number and other numbers in different ways, and presentation of the label "Catalog Number" may be confusing. May need customizable help text.

This is something that could be added to documentation on Symbiota.org; we have a brief explanation of fields but a more in depth description of how they should be used, especially catalog number, is always a good idea!

That's a good approach. This is effectvely a training issue about entering the unique identifier that matches the skeletal data record with an image, whether that is locally called a catalog number or a barcode or an accession number. A followup in the webinar noted that some collections apply both barcodes and catalog numbers to specimens and that in that particular case the desired number to map to dwc:catalogNumber was the barcode number. A key concern was that the label "Catalog Number" may differ in meaning between collections that are doing minimal data capture within the same Symbiota instance.

Both Arctos and MCZbase have context sensitve help links on pages on the collections management system applications out to an appropriate page on documentation wikis. This might be the generalization - context sensitive help widgets that can link out to the Symbiota.org wiki or to a TCN's own procedure guide.
