[OS X] Syncplay crashes immediately on launch. #180

I tried setting of a friends Mac with Syncplay and it crash the moment I tried launching the program. I didn't have this problem with either my desktop or laptop Macs. My friend doesn't have the best computer practices, so I have no idea what could me conflicting with Syncplay. I just upgraded it to the latest version of El Capitan, the newest OS the machine is compatible with.

What are some trouble shooting steps I can go through?

Not sure if this is the appropriate place to be asking this. I'll take it down if it isn't.

I still have the machine for a few more hours.

Syncplay version 1.5.2 Mediaplayer would be VLC 3.0.2, but I haven't gotten to the Syncplay configuration window yet. macOS 10.11.6

Same thing. Tried it with a fresh user account as well and same thing.

The machine is a 2008 MacPro3,1. The hardware might look a little odd as I removed the bad optical drives, added additional storage and replaced the graphics card. This is the report that this dialog creates. Is there a different log file you're looking for?

Ok, thanks for this description. However, I just tested Syncplay on a vanilla 10.11.6 install and it works, so I do not think this is a bug from our side. Nevertheless, let's try to find it.

Try to open the Syncplay executable from Terminal. Open a terminal and execute the path for the binary. For example, if you put Syncplay in the Applications folder, the executable is at /Applications/Syncplay.app/Contents/MacOS/Syncplay

Just type this string in Terminal and run it. It should give you a more useful error message. If you did not put Syncplay in the Applications folder, replace the initial part of the path accordingly.

Quick google search later:

The "illegal instruction" message is simply telling you that your binaries contain instructions the version of the OS that you are attempting to run them under does not understand.

I'm going to try and convince him to let me do a fresh reinstall in the near future, but I have no idea why this would be happening. As near as I can remember, this current installation started as a clean install of Yosemite with the old user settings migrated over from Snow Leopard.

Absolutely none... I only know that I personally packed the legacy version on a 10.6.8 system, so it works on older macOS machines. However, the "regular" version (automatically packed by Travis CI) supports systems from Yosemite and onward. I guess that your system somehow retained a quite old library during the updates, but this could compromise many other applications.

For now, I am closing this. Let me know if you find any further information from the Mac of your friend, and enjoy Syncplay :)
