https://github.com/SyneRBI/SIRF/blob/f17f050d86c6e2b249f48a43795986a7aa7a54ea/src/xSTIR/cSTIR/stir_data_containers.cpp#L84 and other places assume that all numbers are at least 0. I haven't checked if this is true in Gadgetron/Nifti.
