When adding a texture variant #5 or model variant #6, have the ability to "attach" a side effect for when that variant spawns.
For example, if the variant texture is of a rotted undead wolf texture, you could attach a disease that the NPC would have that the normal versions would not. If the model/texture variant for an axe is crazy epic, you could of course lower its spawn probability, but also add a special enchantment, script, etc.
