Investigation has shown that this is a design problem. This most often happens when the core is deleted and rebuilt with different fields.
A short term solution cold be to add additional catches that performs exception handling and parsing (which would be messy and non-standard) or to perform additional sanity checks to prevent errors.
A long term solution would be to design Sage in such a way that this is not a concern.
Further investigation revealed that when the Reader, or perhaps Writer, core changes in some way that causes the fields to disappear then NULL values end up in places that they should not end up in. (ID ends up being NULL.)
