Minor cleanup #2351

This PR cleans some small things up I stumbled upon:

removes empty examples
align French examples to those in other languages
use self-closing tags for dataRef

Sorry for the gloss, wanted to save that for another PR. But it shouldn't hurt anyway.

A couple more comments, @rettinghaus (see detailed comments on diff page). If we can resolve them quickly (i.e, before Tue 18 Oct), I am inclined to just wrap them in with or without a French speaker’s approval so they get into upcoming release.
