Burn Severity Ratios #75

Open sbassett opened 3 years ago

sbassett commented 3 years ago

Wildfire severity fraction high = 0.26, medium = 0.29, and low = 0.45 from Lyderson et al., 2017

? group Med severity in with High severity ?

Independent of climate conditions; uniform across land categories

Burn severity mosaics from MTBS

sbassett commented 2 years ago

Interesting decreasing trend in burn severity from MTBS: https://tnc.box.com/s/r62jykhyfj8i1swt77l1j7q6k97ppzkg Can look at this on our Wednesday call.

Hypotheses:

  1. As good fire increases, burn severity decreases.
  2. Larger "boxes" around fires and increased firing operations decrease severity within "fire perimeter"
  3. Non-forest fires dilute the signal that we expect to see.

See Lyderson et al., 2017, rely on peer reviewed analysis instead of making our own numbers. high = 0.26, medium = 0.29, and low = 0.45 This is from one fire, so not particularly.
