Update fails as Record owner's name is longer than 18 characters

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Attempt to modify an Opportunity Owner 
2. The new Opportunity Owner's name is longer than 18 characters
3. Update fails

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I would like the Opportunity Owner is modified as appropriate. Instead I get 
the attached error message.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?  With
what Salesforce.com edition?
Enterprise Edition
Windows XP
Version 6.16

Please provide any additional information below.
