No sound on Windows except through headphones #1166

As the title says, I'm on Windows and one day sound just stopped working, except when I change the device to headphones. I've restarted the app and reinstalled it multiple times, different versions, restarted computer multiple times, etc. but nothing worked. I'm still only getting sound when I set the device to headphones. I normally have it set to the default device, which is usually my speakers, and every other app works fine, except Tauon.

I think this may have had something to do with having Ableton Live open at the same time and setting the sound engine to MME/DirectX instead of ASIO. I'm not sure though, this hasn't happened before, and I haven't updated Tauon since I installed 7.6.6 on this computer. I can't figure out how to get it to output normally again.

Try going to MENU > Settings > Audio and selecting default. If that doesn't work then I'm not sure.

Fyi to force a full reset of tauon you'd have to also delete the state.p file as mentioned here https://github.com/Taiko2k/Tauon/wiki/User-Data-Files

What I did was rename the original folders in Program Files and AppData\Local so it would make new directories when I reinstalled it, which it did, but it still didn't work. Selecting the default audio device doesn't work, even when the speakers are selected in Windows's settings (Windows 11 btw, forgot to mention). I'm now poking around with the Control Panel sound settings and can't get anything going. Still restarting Tauon and my PC several times in between, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything. I'll see if I can find any good Windows sound diagnostics programs and report my findings here if/when I find a solution.

Just to check, does the visualiser show activity when playing and tauons softvol is not set to zero?

NotGabe001 commented 3 weeks ago

Going to Audio settings in Tauon, setting device to either Default or Speakers (High Definition Audio Device), and making sure Windows sound output is Speakers, playing a song does show activity in the visualizer. If I change devices while the app is open, there will no longer be activity in the visualizer until I re-open Tauon.
