Druids will continue to regrow mineshafts even if they don't have food and kill themselves #1053

The druids stop as soon as they take hunger damage. The problem is that if they don't have food then it's probably a poor village (like mine) so most likely they will be depressed and won't make it to the storage chests in time before they die (also like mine on several occasions)
