SimpleMDE is not maintained anymore and has problems with font-awesome5. A good begin would be https://github.com/Ionaru/easy-markdown-editor , which seems to be more up to date. As it is a fork of SMDE, integration should be simple.

Things to do:

[x] download & include easyMDE files
[x] remove SMDE files
[x] check / fix js-functions that invoke SMDE
[x] look for a better solution to the editor-height problem

easyMDE seems more capable than simpleMDE. It has custom functions that could help to later easily upload images on the go.

The height problem was also solved by using the minHeight parameter, although it now scales based on the input. I will monitor this and adjust if necessary.
