use direct GPIO for LEDs and buttons

Instead of using input- and output- shift registers, attach LEDs and buttons directly to the MCU.

Disadvantages:

• more of the MCU's pins are used

Advantages:

• LEDs can be dimmed via PWM
• buttons may generate interrupt
• less wiring (in hardware)
• less components to buy and assemble
