We have tested 5050. 2020 may also be worth trying out.

WS2812/B (4 pins, one bad px brings down the following px, easier to source)
WS2813/B (6 pins, one bad px doesn't bring down the following px, harder to source)
SK6812 (clone, but maybe an improvement)
APA102 (SPI, needs two data pins)
APA104 (direct replacement for WS28XX series)

I did a more thorough write up here. We are currently testing WS2812 vs. SK6812.
