i started looking into ipfire, it's pretty good! there's a debian package and their DB also include ASN lookups. Tor has been using this since maxmind closed up free access.

That's great. I would love to remove Maxmind dependencies. I am adding that for v2

You can consider the free IP2Location LITE database in https://download.ip2location.com/lite/
