Pinning filters should be automatic #115

(copying my issues from reddit to here where they can be better tracked http://www.reddit.com/r/teammentor/comments/11nr6a/pinning_filters_should_be_automatic/)

Why does the user have to manually pin filters? Why doesn't the url automatically reflect the current state of the UI? The user should be able to copy the url at any point and get a url that would recreate the current view of the application.

That is an interesting UX issue since there are advantages both ways

The pinned filters are a new feature in 3.2 , and we should explore other variations (like pin by default) and see its side effects

care to elaborate on any advantages of having to pin filters manually?

DinisCruz commented 12 years ago

My view is that it is harder for first users when it is pinned automatically (I had the problem in the original version of TM).

Maybe a solution is to give a visual clue (for a couple times) when the filters are removed.

what is the result of a filter being pinned? The only side effect that I know of is that the URL includes the filter. Are there other side effects of pinning a filter? If that is the only thing that pinning a filter does, is there any reason why not to have the current URL reflect the current state of the UI?

Pinning also causes the filter to persist when you select different nodes in the tree. I think your suggestion is good though, once added - they should persist in the UI and be shown in the URL. Its a useful feature that would be easier to use with this change.

Marking this as a p1 feature request (important customer request).

I also second a request for pinning to be automatic. In fact it's more of a UX issue know with the tiny pin images in the top left (Is filled in pinned or not pinned?)

A suggestion would be for the filters in the search view to always show all the filters, regardless of which node is selected. This way we could see at a glance which filters are checked, and not have to look at the top left corner. Instead of the way the filter view dynamically changes based on the articles available in the node.
