wadsworth constant: skip first 30% of every video #10261

Checklist

Feature description

The wadsworth constant refers to the fact that skipping the first 30% of any video is usually not detrimental as it's mainly introduction, sponsors, etc.

I think that adding a checkbox in the panel that controls playback speed and pitch in the player would be a good idea. When it's checked it would skip the first 30%. When unchecked it wouldn't do anything.

Why do you want this feature?

To save time and, more importantly, attention.

I'm pretty sure that most users don't care about what this theory is called Wadsworth content or not. For simpler understanding, I would recommend having a slider for Auto-skip segments in the beginning by percentage which would let the user auto-skip between first 5% to 50% of the video.

I compleyely agree with @SameenAhnaf

Have you tried using Newpipe Sponsorblock?

SameenAhnaf commented 1 year ago

@opusforlife2 Sponsorblock is not useful in all the cases. Personally, I am from third world country and most videos I watch are not marked for segments. So, I believe this feature is still relevant.

I have not tried newpipe sponsorblock but don't think this is very relevant tbh as i'm after skipping every intro and not just sponsored segments.

Then you can check SponsorBlock settings as it should be skipping more types. SponsorBlock is community driven so you would need to encourage others to submit or do so yourself. SponsorBlock has a Github and a Discord.

Can anyone link me to the NewPipe Sponsorblock repo? I can't find anything up to date, only old forks (at least a couple months).

They'll update soon, https://github.com/bravenewpipe/NewPipe

Sponsorblock would actually be the solution to this, even if the NewPipe Team does not like it for whatever personal reason they might have.

Sponsorblock can actually skip Intros and stuff like that, it has multiple categories (Sponsor, Intro, Credits, ...).

@SameenAhnaf Sponsorblock is indeed useful if you are from a third world country and watch videos that have not any marked segments, you just add the segments yourself and contribute to this great project. If noone uses it it will never be useful so...

But a random 30% skip of the video is a laughable idea to replace real Sponsorblock

SameenAhnaf commented 1 year ago

@0verEngineer I never said that Sponsorblock is worthless in third world countries. What I meant is that most users in countries like mine use smartphones and submitting segments on phones is extremely difficult if you tried so on YouTube Vanced. Also, many of them are not well aware about web extensions like Sponsorblock and that decreases the number of segment contributors even more.
