[Feature Request] Add Download Tab Option #2565

Open quincyp opened 5 years ago

quincyp commented 5 years ago

One of the primary features I use NewPipe as compared to YouTube vanced or other alternatives is the downloads

Customizing the appearance/shown tabs is very nice and a downloaded tab would be great instead of going through the hamburger menu.

Stypox commented 5 years ago

Great idea! This could be implemented along with #2477

zequip commented 5 years ago

This would be very useful, I always felt it was misplaced in the hamburger menu and I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Defleg commented 2 years ago

This is the one major thing I need in the app, but it's been mentioned since 2019. That doesn't give me much hope.

I was about to make the same request, would love to see "Downloads" be added as an option to choose in "Content of main page", personally I would set is as my first tab, as that's where I go when I open NewPipe (I usually trigger the download itself outside of NewPipe by sharing to NewPipe, so I really only open NewPipe to watch downloads).

Would really like to see this feature. Downloads as a tab would be really slick.

Apology for the duplicate.

Any developments on this or a reason why this doesn't seem to be a priority? I and seemingly many others primarily make use of the downloading feature and would love to see it supported as a first class citizen, even if disabled by default as to avoid clutter for those who may be less interested.

If downloading is your main use case, you should be using Seal from F-Droid (https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.junkfood.seal/).

Why "should" they though? I can see that some want NewPipe first and foremost to be a YouTube player alternative, but if the download functionality is already there and users use it often and are happy with NewPipe otherwise (maybe want to stream some videos with NewPipe, when they don't want to have it in their YouTube history, or when ReVanced is broken as a fallback), why not make downloads a first-class content category available as tab next to subscriptions, etc. Makes more sense to have it there instead of in the side menu anyway. A bit silly having to install two apps when NewPipe could already do all you want. Also, considering that you can download directly when sharing to NewPipe, it seems like using it as a downloader primarily was a respected use case at some point...

Personally I use YTDLnis for more sophisticated YouTube downloads these days. I guess a YouTube player alternative, that allows to show downloads on top level would be Grayjay. But Grayjay lacks the "share to download" pop-up convenience...

Unless somebody steps up to maintain and improve the downloader-related code, this will always be the case. This isn't a philosophical suggestion, but a practical one.

I am confused, this is not about the downloader, but just being able to render the downloads list, which already exists, as an optional tab - which generally is functionality that also already exists. I think we are aware, that this takes efforts nonetheless, and that, if we don't do it, we have to wait for someone else to contribute. But this feature request is definitely reasonable and just about showing/tracking demand for that feature at this point. I think people are aware that alternatives generally exist, and the statement "if you want downloads in NewPipe to be more accessible, use another app" was just a bit confusing to me in a feature request.

But I suppose you just wanted to help by pointing out alternatives to use in the meantime, as it is apparent that this feature is not considered high priority here...
