Most FOSS communities are moving or have moved to Matrix. So the momentum is there. Your case happens to be a special one, but if you stick around you're likely to get involved in more FOSS communities over time. We stuck with IRC both for backwards compatibility and because Matrix bridges to it.
This issue has been closed a long time ago. Please don't try to revive old issues because you're unhappy with the result of the discussion.
