No auto-update or prompt on AndroidTV #4628

Open sorryusernameisalreadytaken opened 4 years ago

Checklist

Steps to reproduce the bug

  1. Install a previous version of newpipe on an AndroidTV device like nvidia shieldTV or Amazon FireTV or xiaomi TV stick
  2. Wait for an update or notification

Expected behavior

actually expected: an in-app dialog which reproduces the notification on mobile, as some android-TV don't have notifications.

user message: I would be nice to have a onboard-apk-downloader that automaticly updates to the newest version. I remember that we had friends visiting us in summer and I say "yes of course newpipe is like the youtube app". But then there was an error and I had to do a smart apk update via adb shell. :D After that everything was fine, but it was bad PR for newpipe, especially for it noobs.

On Android TV a browser is not always installed and if it is, it is really cruel to load and install an APK via DPAD. A notification does not appear.

Already rejected, see #3141

This is not a duplicate in my pov and what is about a notification? I see no problem on my phones but on a TV android device like nvidia shieldTV or Amazon FireTV or xiaomi TV stick I got no information about an update.

You are asking for an internal updater

Expected behavior

I would be nice to have a onboard-apk-downloader that automaticly updates to the newest version.

I answered internal player has been rejected.

But I see what you are telling me in your new message. There are no notifications on some android TV devices, and you can't know when there is a new update

Should we just discourage direct installation and tell Android TV users to use our custom repo in F-Droid?

Thats the thing. It is already discouraged by manufacurers. So we dont need to adress this.

With auto-update by custom stores without root being a feature this is a non-issue. Close as not-planned.

Not everyone has the luxury of being on A12+. Newpipe supports Lollipop.

Ive got a very cheap ATV. It works ok. But you really are discouraged from sideloading, since you cant access the default file manager easily (or at all depending on version). Thats a part of my argument.

And usuallynyou know because you are likely to use NP on your phone if you use it on ATV
