What about selecting random background colours for differenciating channels? For example, black background for NBC news, green for CNN etc.
That could work but it requires you to memorize different colours for each channel wheras a small channel thumbnail will be more convenient to use.
Also in the screenshot shared above everything is in the same color and background.
Using different colours will be cosmetically ugly/weird just imagine how it will look like one pink one green one blue one red 😖. Nonetheless that also can work if the user is not concerned about the aforesaid issues.
It will get confusing if the user have say 50 subscribed channels or more.
Maybe add an option to use choose color or channel thumbnails or both as seperate switches.

Making both optional will involve a lot of options.

Either option 1 or 2 would improve the current situation. However, I would have a strong preference for having the channel name in bold with the video title below it, without any thumbnail. Layout something like:
Channel name Video title view info + dat/time posted progress bar
My reasoning is that, personally, I disable thumbnails because I don't want to see them. Especially because they are getting increasingly annoying lately due to encouragements by google's algorithms.

Feature description
Use channel thumbnails or channel name in bold text with enlarged font size such that it fits on placeholder area instead of blank placeholder when load thumbnails is turned off or provide an option to choose between blank placeholder and channel thumbnails
Why do you want this feature?
The main purpose of not loading thumbnails is to save data which can also be achieved by using small channel thumbnails/channel name in bold letters and enlarged font size instead which will in turn reduce data usage
It makes it easy to identify which videos to watch as people have some favourite channels which they don't want to miss out. Furthermore using only texts forces user to read through all the text which makes selection of which videos to watch a bit more difficult and boring.
Nice GUI enhancement while retaining the original purpose of the option.
