[Discussion] What would a planet side game look like? #1076

We had a good conversation at #gamedesign on discord, including myself, @koosemose , @Tranberry , and @sboigelot. We thought about the following questions:

  1. What does mining look like on a planet?
  2. What does operations look like? Do we have bases, or do a whole small planet?
  3. What does the presence of an atmosphere do to the game?
  4. Can a base move off of a planet?

What we decided is that a base shouldn't be able to leave the planet. It should be a small part of a planet. There can be a number of potential base locations shown on each planet. Expeditions can be set up to other locations, to send raw goods that aren't available at the main base site. The atmosphere of the planet is present as the composition of the gas of the outside room, and might factor in to things later on such as converting that air to rocket fuel, breathable air, and no doubt other things as well. Building on a planet makes mining important. We found the layered approach to likely be the best, where you can look at one layer at a time in the normal top-down 2-d approach, possibly getting a glimpse of what lies below if there's a hole, but otherwise not.

We also discussed Seasons, #1019 that would be present on a planet,

(Standard disclaimer) Nothing in this is binding, it is intended to serve as a stepping point for future discussions. If there is general agreement, then we can move it to the wiki that is more accepted than anything in this thread.

I confirm that this is representative of the general direction of our conversation.
