NAND Backup fails on 3.1.1.0 on Vienna #1177

TWRP 3.1.1.0. Phone Huawei P9 Plus Firmware VIE-L29C636B130 OEMUnlocked but not using SU type root tool.

Backing up to "external" sd card in second sim slot using default options (apart from changing destination to SD card). Backup works fine for all partitions except data.

When backing up data partition, I get an error 255 caused by Tar. Initially the error appeared to be caused by installed app about 1/2 way through the back up. Uninstalled app, and tried again, problem occurred on different app. Uninstalled that, and tried again, problem occurred on different app almost immediately. Tried again several time (without any further uninstalls) and now backup fails in same way but on random and different files each time.

Backup is about 8Gb, and is to empty 32 GB SD card.
Have performed separate write test on SD card with no errors.

Update:
Same error occurs when writing backup to USB storage.
Error does NOT occur when writing backup to built in SD card storage.
