Description

In this project we will map signposts in the Detroit, Michigan area. We will focus on adding new signposts as well as improving consistency in the existing data.

download

How to map

We will follow the destination:* mapping scheme that is already in wide use in North America:

We will use OpenStreetCam and Mapillary as sources. CheckAutopista will be useful to detect incomplete or incorrect exit tagging.

Who will be involved?

Telenav mapping team with the following users: alinan_telenav, biancah_telenav, simonap_telenav

I would recommend that if there is an existing exit_to tag that it be retained while the destination:* information is added. Also, in past experience adding this information, there are many instances where the highway=motorway_junction tag is missing or is incorrectly added (i.e. node ending motorway entrance ramp). Recommend that this task also include the addition of missing motorway_junction tags and the removal of incorrectly placed motorway_junction tags.

While editing signposts in Detroit, we've found some inconsistencies in the OSM data, and we were wondering how to manage them.

Case 1

s1

The tags in OSM look like this: s2

We also checked with Wikipedia and information doesn't match: s3

Case 2

s4 s5

It seems that the destination:street tag was taken from the first street: s6 Is it correct to add information that is not on the signpost?

Case 3

s7 s8

Any suggestions on how to approach these cases? Our suggestion is to keep in OSM only the information that is on the sign. What are your thoughts on this?

I would recommend having the destination tags represent the actual sign information.

RE Case 1: If you go back to 2007 in Google Street View, you can see that then the sign matched the information in Wikipedia.

Case 1: M14 basically ends at Plymouth at the junction with I-96, right on the border with Livonia (both are separate cities). It does not go to Detroit (though its continuation as I-96 does). So Plymouth is right. It gets close enough to Livonia that one could add Livonia as a destination.

Case 2: The sign at the junction of US 23 and Washtenaw Boulevard says only Ann Arbor in that direction, which is correct. Washtenaw basically takes you only into the heart of Ann Arbor, no further.

We worked on this issue for 8 days and succeeded to review all motorway exits in Detroit area for adding new signposts or editing existing ones.

Breakdown stats for adding signposts in Detroit area:

git1

The following chart shows how the numbers increased during our work to improve the map: image

The areas where we edited are highlighted in the heatmap below: image

Great progress Manuela. Would you happen to know which ones still need an image? I noticed, node 61858496 includes a motorway_junction but is missing destination information. A list would be helpful to local community so that we know where we can help collect imagery and add missing information. Thanks

     Great work, folks!
By the way, how do you get the data?

From the State of Michigan or do you have to go out and take photos of each sign?

@markscalf Thank you very much for your support. The remaining motorway junctions without image have the following node ids: 62475953, 61528723, 61524982, 61527941. Any help is very useful.

@techlady Thank you for your comment. We added the signpost information only from OpenStreetCam and Mapillary pictures.
