I connect with terraterm (windows) and ssh in through wifi. You have to manually assign a port in the wifi settings because the dns won't work. at least not for me. works great. Putty would work just fine too I'm sure.
It does work fine, @temporarilyoffline/X6100-Toads where can we find info on how to alter firmware with opentx etc for future use?

You can use your favorite serial terminal program on your favorite OS. You are correct, no need for raspberry pi.
It is possible to connect with putty (and maybe others) to the first COM port in device manager list
