ethers-v6 is now commonly used, and hardhat has been based on it for months.
I suggest bumping your packages to ethers-v6 to keep them up to date with the current web3 tools.
It has a lot of implications, such as first bumping the core packages, but I think that its worth it since you'll have to do it one day.
