Poking @Trekmarvel for input
I agree, for the icon size I would opt for 64x64 pixel, we have now a lot of texture in this format, from @skaldarnar's TTA to the Potions module.
Tagging @rzats @Cervator for discussion regarding icon size.
I'd go for 64x64 - higher resolution is better 😛 Most of the GCI icons appear to be around ~100x100 anyway.
64x64 allows for pretty nicely detailed icons when we care about the look. So in some cases I'd like to encourage that (if 32x32 causes only slight loss of detail it might be worth it). At the same time I don't have a great idea of where our odd performance/memory issue comes from when oddly sized or larger images get involved. I do imagine we can solve that and 64x64 should be fine.
I'd opt for either 32x32 or 64x64. I'm kind of biased towards the latter for more detail, but only for certain objects that need it.
I am not really an art-ish person, but I personally think it'd be a good idea to assign someone seperately to this. I think that the issue during GCI was that we had loads of people quickly submitting loads of PRs without actually drawing the food (as we can see by the looks of the lettuce in this module...) :)
Might want a small team, not too large, working on textures as with large teams the style of textures will be too diverse and you'll end up like this.
Reason behind this comment is that I think some of the food is low-quality work. Personally I prefer high quality content in smaller amounts to low quality content in large amounts.
If necessary I guess I could draw some textures, but don't expect them to look any better... :D
I'm wondering if it might even be worth commissioning some stuff. I've put together a bunch of stuff for the SimpleFarming module but that's fairly simple. It does include all the veg and fruit from this module as well however.
For GCI it may help to this time around ask for submissions into a specific extended module, from which we only pick the good stuff that matches the game style etc. That might get us the best of both worlds - easy tasks for students to get them started, without expecting perfection first try, while keeping out some of the ... odd submissions.
As for commissions we could consider that, maybe even simply by adding code bounties to related issues. Another option is to seek out existing texture packs that seem appropriate.
@skaldarnar In case you're bored sometime and want to make use of the tablet
In Google Code-In we get a lot of new food items and icons, but sadly some of them doesn't really fit the overall game art style, it would be great if we can uniform them.
