Javadoc fails to 'compile' in JDK 8 #2

It looks like stripping out the original TC maven parent caused a changes in the way javadoc was being build (I guess a chance in the javadoc plugin being used?). Anyway this means master doesn't build under 1.8 at the moment due to javadoc errors.
