Struggling to obtain colors which require crossbreeding with a wither rose to obtain #36

Sprout 1.4.4 Forge 43.2.1 Minecraft 1.19.2

I'm having a really hard time getting any flowers to crossbreed into brown, black or gray. From what I understand from the source code, it appears that a 'mixed' flower type should be crossbreedable with a wither rose to obtain brown or black flower types, but this just isn't happening in gameplay.

I've used stack upon stack of bonemeal on the output box to force flower breeding outputs in different combinations, and not a single one has ended up as brown or black, or even gray with a white partner. I have only ever gotten direct copies of the parent flowers in the exact same colors; this does not line up with how the other color crossbreeding works in a valid combination and it actually took me having to stare at the source code for a bit to check whether wither roses were, in fact, involved at all.

I've managed to get every other kind of color/flower combination through crossbreeding and I understand that the chance of a new color variant is low, but it's hard to believe I'm actually this fantastically unlucky. I've gone through 20+ stacks of bone meal on the middle flower bed trying to get any gray, black or brown flowers, and it just hasn't happened.

I've tried breeding pretty much every 'mixed color' of flower with the wither rose, whether it's a naturally occurring color in an existing vanilla flower(orange, magenta, light blue, pink) or one of the new ones added by Sprout(green, cyan, purple, lime). I have also tried crossbreeding wither roses with white flowers(whether vanilla or added by Sprout) and have never gotten them to crossbreed black into the other type, or gotten a gray flower.

Am I misunderstanding something regarding the process of obtaining black/brown/gray flowers, or is this a bug?

the black and brown ones are a very low chance I may up this in the future but as of right now they have a 1% of happening.

The gray flowers require a black flower, not a wither rose but I may also change this in the future.
