as far as I understand, it's fixed by commit: https://github.com/The-Panacea-Projects/Gnomenu/pull/138 but this commit has not been pushed to a release on extensions.gnome.org

@The-Panacea-Projects do you mind pushing a new release if the commit is a proper solution?

You can find a patched version that works in gnome 3.36, 3.38 and (new) 40 on my blog https://giacomoblog.info/blog/gnomenu-revisited/
