I have added epigenomically_modified_region and updated the definition for epigenetically_modified_region as follows:
[Term] id: SO:0001720 name: epigenetically_modified_region def: "A region of DNA that is modified in such a way that chromatin folding and transcription may be modified with no changes in the underlying DNA sequence. Examples include changes in DNA methylation status and regions bound by modified histones." subset: SOFA synonym: "epigenetically modified region" RELATED [] is_a: SO:0005836 ! regulatory_region intersection_of: SO:0001411 ! biological_region intersection_of: has_quality SO:0000133 ! epigenetically_modified relationship: has_quality SO:0000133 ! epigenetically_modified
[Term] id: SO:0002332 name: epigenomically_modified_region def: "A biological region implicated in inherited changes caused by mechanisms other than changes in the underlying DNA sequence." synonym: "epigenomically modified region" EXACT [] xref: https://epi.grants.cancer.gov/epigen/#:~:text=mail.nih.gov-,Overview,a%20cell%20or%20entire%20organism. is_a: SO:0001720 ! epigenetically_modified_region relationship: has_quality SO:0000133 ! epigenetically_modified
I am going to close out this issue for now, but I will ask GREEKC members to confirm that the definitions are correct and that they have the correct parent terms.
What is this request referring to? GREEKC has pointed out that SO has a term epigenetically_modified_region (SO:0001720) but the definition states that the biological region is implicated in inherited changes. There are changes of the epigenome that are not inherited.
The National Cancer Institute Website has a page that explains the difference between epigenomics and epigenetics. According to the NCI, epigenomics is inherited changes and epigenetics is processes that regulate transcription that are not passed across generations of cells (or individuals).
What is the name you would like SO to give the term? epigenomically_modified_region
What is the definition that you would like for this term? This could receive the old definition for epigenetically_modified_region: A biological region implicated in inherited changes caused by mechanisms other than changes in the underlying DNA sequence.
The definition of epigenetically_modified_region could be changed to this: A region of DNA that is modified in such a way that chromatin folding and transcription may be modified with no changes in the underlying DNA sequence. Examples include changes in DNA methylation status and regions bound by modified histones.
